Shad Mayfield’s father received the name Silver for wearing his silver jacket in the field. He was a first-generation cowboy.

Silver came from a family of farmers in Mississippi. His dad, Shad’s grandfather, moved the family to New Mexico when Sylvester was a child.

There, the young guy developed a love for horses and rode them bareback. He was once caught by the old man who owned those horses.

That old man taught Sylvester to ride horses and rope calves and bought him a steer. Later, Sylvester bought his first horse, Sara Barb, for $350.

While Silver had to learn everything independently, he was there to guide his son, Shad, from day one.

Shad fondly remembers how his dad taught him to handle pressure and everything about rodeo. He quotes,

My dad put more pressure on me than that in the practice pen.
