Rumors in 2006 made many suspect that Reggie’s family had accepted gifts violating NCAA regulations. The school asked the conference to investigate the situation, and Reggie denied any improper behavior.

The NCAA discovered that starting in December 2004, Reggie had received lavish gifts from Lake and his companion, Michael Michaels, including a limousine trip to the 2005 Heisman Trophy presentation.


Sports agent Lloyd Lake agreed to cooperate with the NCAA and filed a lawsuit against Reggie and his family to recover gifts and cash valued at $291,600.

According to the Los Angeles Times, in April 2009, the NCAA merged its investigations of Reggie and former USC basketball player O. J. Mayo into a single probe of the Trojans athletic programs.

Reggie’s attempt to settle this action through confidential arbitration was rejected, and a trial was scheduled for December 28, 2009. A settlement was reached in April 2010.

Thus, he was given four years of probation and forced to forfeit the team’s last two wins of the 2004 season.

Reggie voluntarily forfeited his title as the 2005 Heisman Trophy winner despite reports that the Trust would strip his award.

Nonetheless, President of USC Max Nikias announced that the university would return the school’s copy of  Reggie’s Heisman Trophy and remove all jerseys and paintings honoring him from its facilities.

“felt like I died when I had to hear that there weren’t gonna be scholarships for kids because of me or because of something connected to me… I’m still not over that. It’s just something you learn to live with.”

On August 23, Reggie announced that he was filing a defamation lawsuit against the NCAA.

The Heisman Trust announced on April 24, 2024, that it would return the Heisman Trophy to Reggie, citing “enormous changes in the college football landscape.

Retired From the NFL And Became A College Football Analyst

In March 2012, Reggie Bush became a partner and spokesperson for the skincare company Barc, BumpDown Razor Bump Relief makers.

He announced his retirement from the NFL on December 15, 2017, and was inducted into the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame on June 5, 2019.
